The Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. spent his last days in Memphis, Tennessee, where he supported more than 1,000 Black sanitation workers as they fought the city government for better pay and the right to unionize.

On April 3, 1968—one day before he was assassinated at the Lorraine Motel—he delivered a speech dubbed “I’ve Been to the Mountaintop” to a rapt crowd at Bishop Charles Mason Temple.
