And while race is at the core of the exhibit, the works present a wide range of viewpoints.

“A lot of people don’t understand contemporary art. We want people to understand it. We also want people to see that African-Americans are prominent in many areas of art,” said Gaida Finnie, executive director of the San Diego African American Museum of Fine Art, who proposed the collaborative show.

The exhibit’s works range from sculpture and photography to painting and drawing and are mostly from the Museum of Contemporary Art’s permanent collection.
