“They’re children, and they need love. At the end of the day, that’s really all that matters.”[/two_fifth][three_fifth_last padding=”0 0px 0 10px”]Sara Crutcher said her adoption at six weeks old in North Carolina was the best thing that’s ever happened to her. Now, at 31, she’s an advertising executive, entrepreneur and graduate of Hampton University thanks to the road her parents helped her pave. She said she knows that many black children who’ve been in foster care aren’t as fortunate, which is why she wrote a children’s book titled Heart Picked: Elizabeth’s Adoption Tale.

While researching information on adoption, Crutcher said she was saddened when she discovered that more than 100,000 children are in foster care. According to Children’s Action Network, there’s a higher percentage of children of color in the foster care system than the percentage in the general U.S. population. The National Black Caucus of State Legislators reported that despite black children costing less to adopt, they are the least likely to move to permanent placement.

ADOPTEE & ADOPTIVE PARENT – AUTHOR[/two_fifth][three_fifth_last padding=”0 0px 0 10px”] Sara Elizabeth Neal Crutcher believes her greatest blessing came at just six weeks old in Greensboro, NC, when she was adopted into a loving and supportive family. At five years old, Sara recalls sitting down with her parents to explain her adoption. Although at the time she did not fully understand what adoption meant; she was reassured that she was heart picked and surrounded by unconditional love.

Many questions still arise about her adoption such as who her birth family are and why they chose to place her up for adoption. Sara hopes her book Heart Picked: Elizabeth’s Adoption Tale, will help young girls and their families have a positive and confident outlook towards being adopted. This book also serves as a way for Sara to have open conversations about adoption as a way of healing.

Sara Elizabeth Neal Crutcher is an advertising executive, entrepreneur and blogger living in Detroit, MI. She graduated from Hampton University with a degree in advertising. She enjoys spending time with her family and friends, traveling the world, reading novels, and playing her violin.
